Inquiries show that quite Su per ! cent, of the films. shown m Sydney have been passed or certified to by the recognised official censors of England or America. The approximate number of films that do not bear any certificate of censorship is about 20 I per cent., consisting chiefly of scenic jor comic films, fto which very little j importance is attached by the police. These figures are most, gratifying to the Minister, who is also pleased at the marked improvenlent in the general character of the pictures _at present being exhibited, such improvement being attributable to the regulations under the Theatres and Public Halls Act, 1908, governing the public exhibition of cinematograph films. These prescribe that no objectionable film shall be exhibited at public- entertainments, ■ including pictures representing executions, murders, successful crime, etc., such as bushranging, robberies, or other acts of, lawlessness, which might reasonably be considered as having an injurious influence on youthful minds.
