A NARROW ESCAPE
NAPIER, Maxell 23. There was a very narrow escape from a very serious accident at the gasworks railway crossing as the first train was arriving this morning from Hastings. A. taxi-driver named John Black got his oar right on the metals before he observed the train upon him. He made a desperate effort to sworve oft, but the engine caught the rear wheel and carried the oar into the cattlo-stops, completely wrecking it. Black was thrown with considerable fore? some distance out, but he escaped with a severe cut in the head. The crossing is a very dangerous one, several fatalities having occurred there, and the Government has been repeatedly urged to install an alarm.
