In reference to Mr Atmore's chanj of Jroitt in saying that his remar at Hastings concerned Mr Herries ai not the Prime Minister, the actu facts "as to the legacy left to $ Herries are now available. At Has ings Mr Atmore said that Mr Masse\ father left him £165,000. When co fronted with this statement at N< son by the Prime Minister, Mr A more quibbled, changed front ai said that he had been misreporte and {that his charge concerned JS Jtierries.
In referring to this affair to a Hoi tika audience the Prime Minister sa thathe had received a telegram fro Mr Herries on the subject. This me sage stated that Mr Atmor.e was tl very limit, and Mr Herries proceed* to say that the facts were that fc father had died in 1869 and left him sum ot £4000. This was insufficiei to keep him in England, so'he hi brought himself and his capital New Zealand. .
