COMMERCIAL.

—_ GRAIN AND PRODUCE

MARKETS

(Christchurch Press, Wednesday.)

There is no change to note in the tone of the local grain market. Business is extremely quiet, there being practically no offerings, and at the same time no particular inquiry. In view of there being a restricted outlet there is no disposition on the part of buyers to advance prices. Whether there will be cheaper freights later on to the United Kingdom remains to be seen, but from Australia 30s per ton is being #sked for parcels of wheat, and 31s 6d for charters, and at the present local and Home prices of wheat no shipping business is being done from Australia- by steamer. There is still a firming tendency in the market for potatoes, and £3 10s is now being offered at country stations It is reported that even higher prices, have been paid, but merchants generally say that they cannot do business with the northern market above a basis of £3 10s to growers. There does not appear to be much prospect at present for a trade in potatoes with Australia. The Australasian quotes locally grown potatoes at various prices from £2 10s to £4 10s for different varieties, and while the local demand is steady there it little inquiry for inter-State shipment. In .Sydney Victorian potatoes aTO quoted at £5 5s to £6, and Tasmaman £6 to £7 10s.
