MISHAP TO THE MAORI
STRIPS PROPELLER BLADE.
CHRISTCHURCH, June 15. The turbine ferry steamer Maori was nearly half-an-hour late in arriving at Lytteltcm from Wellington on Saturday morning.- Inquiries made on board showed that the vessel had cast a blade from the centre propeller. The mishap occurred about 2.45 a.m., when the steamer was about ten miles north of Cheviot. The vessel had been steaming welL and was a little ahead of time. The first indication of the accident was a sudden jar to the ship, which, woke up the passengers." This was followed by a pronounced vibration, in consequence of the propeller revolving at high speed with only two blades 'left. The highpressure turbine, driving the damaged propeller, was at once eased down to stop the vibration, and the vessel came on to port at fifteen knots.
The Maori was docked at 11 o'clock, and it was found that the blade" had snapped off close to the boss. A new propeller was fitted, and the vessel was floated out and sailed last night. \
