TERRIBLE INJURIES.

i INJURED STUDENT'S RECOVERY.

| With success almost at hand, Mr : Heolez Finlayson, of Dover Street, < Malvem, 18 years of age, a promising ; young student who had been pursuing j original investigations under Pro- | fessor Ronnie at the Adelaide Univerj sity for some time, was the victim of a i terrible accident on May 4. His ax- | periments have had to do with explo- : sive compounds, and some months ago j he was the victim of a serious exploj sion, which resulted in a severe injury I being done to his hand. The acci- | dent, however, failed to deter him, ! and as soon as he Ihad sufficiently re- ! covered he resumed his investigations | at the point at which he had left them, j According to his professor, his re- ; searches indicated unusual' ability and : enterprise. About three weeks'ago it ! seemed that everything was in readi--5 ness to make a preliminary test of the • explosive he had invented. He chose ; May 4 for the trial, and went out to ! Glen Osmond. A hand bomb was to ;be used for the first time, and Mr i Finlayson was just screwing in the ; percussion cap when an explosion ocj ourred. His left hand was shattered, ; his right badly hurt, and all the left I side of his face and head frightfully [ injured. In this terrible condition he" < walked to Mr J. Florey's house at \ Mitcham, where Dr Hilda Florey at- | tended him, and had him removed1 to ) the Adelaide Hospital, where his left I hand was amputated, together with i the thumb! of the right hand at the | joint. Finlayson has made a wonderful recovery since the accident, and is able to walk in the grounds of the S hospital. One eye is quite uninjured, ! and though at first it was fea,red the | isight of the other would be lost, it is I now hoped that it may be saved suffij ciently to allow it to be used with the ! aid or a strong lens.
