Thjfc Presbyterian Sunday School picnic took place on. Thursday. The. ■children, with their parents and friends, went to Portage, via Torea, by the s.s. .Wajtobi, which left the wharf soon after 9 a.m. The weather was splendid, and a most enjoyable dlay was spent. .

THE FREEZING! WORKS,

The freezing works are at a standstill as the result oi1 the butchers' dema.nds for increased rates of pay for killing. Work ceased on Thursday, and it is yery uncertain how long the trouble will last.

THEFTS AT THE BATHfi,

On Wednesday « ease of thieving occurred at tho baths. While Mr Admore was in the water his clothes were gone through, and a sum of money (about £4 odd) was stolen from his pockets.

On Thursday afternoon Mr F. Bush lost a few shiDings from his trousers pocket while' bathing. After discovering his loss his suspicions were aroused by the actions of a couple of boyg whom he had eeen earlier in the afternoon, and, knowing of the previous theft, and that one of the boys had changed a sovereign that morning in a grocer's shop, lie put two and two together, and kept & look-out forthorn, finding them soon after. On being questioned regarding the theft they cfenied any knowledge of it, but afterwards confessed that they had taken 4s, which they handed back. The culprits were afterwards handed over to the police.

"OUR MISS GIBBS."

- On Wednesday evening the Albert Hall was comfortably filled by an appreciative audience to gee "Our Miss Gibbs." The opera was thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish. Mr Geo. Edwards as Timothy Gibbs evoked great mirth, and Miss Eva Moore as Miss Gibbs was exceptionally good. The evening was a treat throughout.
