HAVELOCK.

|>BOM OUR CORRESPONDENT.] Monday. A DASTARDLY TRICK. '

On the evening of the Ist instant some person with the larrikin instinct abnormally developed turned out the gas m the Haveiock Town Hall, leaving the whole building in darkness. As the supply in the body of the hall and that in the public library are turned on and off at two different taps the delinquent must have been well acquainted with the working of the plant. Fortunately . nothing happened, although it might easily have been otherw-ise, as all the gas taps at the burners were turned on at the time.—The Town Board should put the matter in the hands of the police for investigation. OBITUARY. Deep and sincere sympathy is felt throughout the Pelorus district with Mr William Reid and his son, Mr J. a. Keid, in the death of Annie Reid, wile of the former and mother of the latter, who passed away on Saturday afternoon about 4 o'clock, after a lingering illness of some months. The deceased lady, who had been only a little over a year in New Zealand, was highly esteemed by all who knew her, and circumstances have made her death at the present time particularly unfortunate for her son. He had left Haveiock on Saturday morning to sit •t ex^mination for accountancy Wjith every prospect of a good pass. Owing to a serious turn for the worse a telegram was sent to Renwick to recall him; and a conveyance also sent to bring him back to Haveiock, where he arrived only in time to see his mother before her death. The funeral took place this afternoon.
