THE UPPER AWATERE.
MEETING OF SETTLERS
BRIDGES WANTED.
[FROM OOR CORRESPONDENT.]
OHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 17. A meeting of Upper Awatere (Marlborough) settlers was held in Chrisicnurch laßt night.' It Was decided to request the chairman of the Awatere County Council to take the necessary steps to have bridges constructed over the Hodder Creek and over the Awatere River near the Limestone Ford, the money for the works to be raised under the Loans to Local Bodies Act.
It was further decided cordially to thank Mr Duncan Rutherford for having borne tho major portion of the cost of the bridge over the Acheron River (between Marlborough and Canterbury), this bridge being the only public- bridge between the two land districts mentioned. The value of the bridge, which practically serves Crown lands entirely, may be judged from the facts that the Acheron is a dangerous river; that (several lives have been lost in attempting to cross it, and that there have been many narrow escapes, besides lose of stock. The motion, which was spoken by several present,' was carried unanimously. .
