"The chief of my party, the Hon. W. F. Massey, himself holds an, en-gine-drivers' certificate," said the Hon. P.M. B. Fisher to the Amalgamated Society of Engineers in Wellington the other night- "When I was coming down here he told me, and I asked him whether he was a marine engineer, or to what division fee belonged. I believe he once drove & traction engine. (Laughter). He has evidently fowid later in life that he.is. a better engineer in politics than he was on a traction engine."

At the meeting of the hospital committee in Wellington on Thursday it waa reported! that the sum of £68 8s had been received from the "Wellington Racing Club, being amount of unclaimed dividends voted by the stewards to the funds of the hospital. It was decided that a letter of thanks fee forwarded to the club.

. A case of the biter < being bitoo-^ ctirred at,. the Agricultural Association's meeting at Wanganui last week (says,the Chronicle). The secretary was busy taking down the names of donors of briees when » joker exclaimed, "Mr —, one guinea." The rictim accepted the ineritable, but promptly announced, "Mr —, (naming the joker), five guineas.*' The latter's expostulations were of no avail, so he tendered a cheque for a guinea in full settlement.
