Friday CHESS AND DRAUGHTS.
Tiie annual meeting of the Chess and Draughts Club took place last o^-ening. Mr W. Watson (President; vas in the chair, and a fair number oZ playcis were present. The report and balance-sheet were read, the lattei showing a' debit balance oi 4s; but it was considered very satisfactory, us during the. previous ycai tables and ploying iec t uisite& had io bo purchased, ajid now they are a valuable asset to the club.
The election ot officprs for the year resulted, as fcliov& :—Patron, Mr J. Ouncau; President, -Mr W. Watson. vice-Presidents, Messrs W. Burrough, Si. b. RuxherJurd, and 11. William.s; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr G. C. Edwards. Committee, Messrs A. M. Arthur, r r . Maitland, J. T. Haiavood, and W. Davies. It was decided vo commence play on Wednesday evening next in the Literaiy Institute. Several new members were pioposed, and every indication was foithcommg tor a prosperous year. Tho Secretary vas instructed to write a letter to the Literary In&titute Coirmittee thanking tiiem for the uso of the room for playing pur•>3oses. Mr Watson donated to the Club two bet-s of bone draughts to be presented to the t^o most impioved players during the season., The President said he hoped that a match would be arranged later on between the Picton and < Blenheim CJubs, as no doubt friendly rivalry would htimuiate play in both towns, besido creating greater interest m the playing of chess and draughts. On the motion of Mr Davies, &econded by Mr Burrough, a vote of thinks, wa^ passed to Mr Watson fov .the great assistance rendered by him m tli(> formation and carrying on of -tl» Club. ' CONGESTION AT THE WHM-F. - 4Tllfe wharf was taxed to its uLraost yesterday. In the afternoon no less than six steamers were berthed- alongside the main vharf, being double hanked each side. They were as follows: The Pakeha, Patecna, Potone, Alexander, Kaitoa, and Stoim. The wJiarf is not often seen in such a congested state. Tho narbor-mastei _ and railway officials dealt with the bitua-' tion most efficiently, and a stranger ••eeing the work of loading, etc., going on as it was would be inclined to think it a daily occurrence. Tho new wharf will not be finished a day tco soon.
