MR WIFFEN'S CANDIDATURE.

10 TBtE EDITOR

Sir,--"Liberal" has now, by live aid of Bobby Burns, the world's jinest poet, developed a poetical strain in the cause of Liberalism. A better plan could not be resorted, to. He has riot yet attained the koynoto of poiftetion, but is most liiopofiil of doing so. Blienheim no doubt _is proud of its aspirant for poetical honors. I do> not suggest that. "Liberal is poaching on any particular preserve; , that ? I need hiardly remind him, is an impossibility— the fortifications aire too strong, Nedtlier do I isuggest it audacity on tho part of Mr Wiffen to offer Jiis services for this electorate. Mr Wiffen or any man is his own iree agent, and can therefore please himseif whether he contests the seat or not. I keep "Liberal" to .the on© essential point, ''What led Mr Wiffen. to contest the seat?" Did not a strained relationship between him and Mr' McCallum suddenly originate on a certain question put by Mr McCallum to Mr Wiffen, and 'a few days after the breach did Mr Wiffen not declare himseli-as a candidate for' th© electorate? Now, let my Liberal friend, who uses all kinds of vulgarislns which are most difficult to translate, be good enough to ans|wer the above question, seeing Jie is. ■hi sucli coniidenc© with Mr Wiffien. 1 t have my information not from Mr McCallum, but from the best of authority. Any questions I have pwt to the candidate are my own, and "Liberal" lias been insinuo, tive and cowardly. "Liberal" considers because my letter was published in I'Tbe Maklboeough Express that he had tho preferential answering of it. I This proves his lack of thought and i wisdom. I reserved the right of judgment to send my letter either to The Express or to Mr Wiffen prij vat«ly. The former way was [ chosen. "Liberal" loses sight of the fact that Mr Wiffen has now placed himself in the public's hands, and is therefore subject to ]ust criticism; yes, true it is, criticism makes tho man. "Liberal" asks me to prove one single statement of his to be absolutely incorrect. Did I, in my first lettor or any letter I have written on this.subject, accuse Mr Wiffen of angling for the Roman Catholic votes ? Did I mention any particular denomination? . Roman Catholicism was never mentioned. How does "Liberal" knoAv that it- was not tlio Anglican, the Presbyterian, the Methodist, or even the Mormons referred to in my letter? Mr WifTen is in favor of giving them all a subsidy; then what would be the result? The State schools would be closed as we would have do more use for them, and in the Mormon school there would be the image of old Brigham Young engraved on a slab of N.Z. granite. Now, "Liberal," I claim tho victory; submit your name. \. DOUGLAS SPIERS. Picton, 16/9/11.
