NAPIER-WAIHI RAILWAY.

[press association.]

GISBORNE, March 18. The Hon. R. McKenzie reached Gisborne to-night from Motu and was welcomed at the latter T>lace by the settlers and matters Of district interest placed before him. He stated that the railway would go within two miles of Motu township. -He would not rest satisfied till connection was. made from Napier to l W.aihi. He knew the difficulties of cohstruction beyond Motu, but he was. very hopeful of getting a good grade from Papamoe to Opotiki. Although the route was a few miles longer than by Pukihi, still he was satisfied that the railway by Papamoe was the cheapest and also' opened up a large area of good country, whereas by Pakihi there was no settlement to speak of.
