"THE GAS!" SHE GASPED
A certain old lady, who had been brought vp t in the country, lately removed into the city. Seeing a penny4n-the-slot gas-meter behind the door, she enquired of a neighbour what it was for, and was told that she had to put pennies in. Some weeks after the gas inspector called, and began taking the money from the meter., The old woman watched him keenly for. a few moments, and then said to him:
"Hey! what are you doin'?" "I'm eollectin' the money for the gas," replied the inspector. "The gas!" exclaimed the old woman.' "Why, I thought it were a money-box. I was savin' up against old age!"
