HIBERNIAN SOCIETY.

ANNUAL SPORTS GATHERING

SOME EXCELLENT RUNNING.

Better weather than that which j.: prevailed for the Hibernian Society's I Sports meeting held on the A. and P. | Show Ground yesterday could not have been desired. It is true that it was very hot at midday, but in the afternoon a light breeze sprang up and made matters much more pleasant for spectators and 'competitors alike. There was a very good attendance of the public, over £60 being taken at the gates. The ground was very hard, and more than one competitor felt th© effect of running on it. The racing was the best that has bee.n seen here for a considerable ' time, the finishes at times being very close. All the events, with the exception of two bicycle races and the maiden, went to competitors from •.other parts of the Dominion, the winners of. these exceptions being Maddock in the one mile cycle event. Sheen in the two mile cycle race, and R. Foster in the maiden foot ra.ee. The last mentioned also qualified for the final of St. Patrick's Handicap, and secured sixth place. -In the Publicans' Handicap, Gi Kinsey,'by a brilliant effort, succeeded in defeating Yellan, who hails from Auckland, by inches. Great interest was - centred in the St: Patrick's £100 ' handicap, and several of the visitors t ? were • regarded as having chances' i second' to k none of winning. Darby,* , who comes from • the Auckland dis- ' trict,- from- the 12 yards- mark, won the filial ' after a desperate set-to with Campion, of Wanganui. The time registered was 15secs.,- • which, taking the ground into consideration, was very good. Yellan secured third place, but protests ' were- ''entered against him for his second in the Publicans' Handicap and also fer this third, and the issue at presenfr"hangs in the1 balance. A protest was also lodged, against Darby by Campion, who alleged that he v wop. a^handicap two months previoWiy 1' Waihi under a different-name. Both men were subsequentlyM;phbtographted for the purpose of,' < identifida.tidh. Another race? in which, a greld^/'dfeafc . of interest)was* centred was-^e^gje^fc-l, don Half-mfle Handicap. Additional 11 i interest was' created in this1 event 'b^ the reason that there was a side wager put up by two local "sports" on the result of the meeting of Ter■;rill, the scratch man' and Lambert, who was on 60yds. The condition' of this wager was that one of'these two must get a place. As it happened, however, neither finished, although the supporter of Lambert was decidedly fortunate in not losing - his money. Farrelly (Hsistings>won"this" " race from the 60yds mark in the good - time of Imin' 58secs. It must also be* taken into consideration' that Far-; relly strained a'muscle in his-left leg early in the day, and his performance was therefore the more, meritorious. A protest was lodged against Farrelly, it being alleged that he-had-iK>t sent in his correct"1 performancesj ' He signed a declaration to the> effect that his performances we're"correct. The Committee dismissed the protest and returned the ten shillings > deposited. Cunningham (Petone) *nnexed the 220 yds hurdles, with Strickland and Terrill filling the places. The Forced Handicap was won by. , Donnelly. The-sports were a decided success m every way, and the officials are to be congratulated upon' the manner in which they attended to! everything and everybody. Mr A. Curry was successful in his despatch- ' ing, and the decisions of the judges' were given promptly. The secretary' (Mr T. Mitchell) who had the lion's share of the work, did all that was required of him in a most efficient" manner. The Hibernian Band en- ' tertained the public in between the races ,and generally all the patrons of the Hibernian Sports yesterday were well catered for.
