EXHIBITION GRAIN.
FOR LONDON AND ROUBAIX
BLENHEIM BARLEY BEATEN
[from "our correspondent.]
CHRISTCHURCH, March 15. There is at present on view t in the city a very fine display of grain that is intended for the forthcoming exhibitions in London and Roufcaix (France). There may seen samples of grain in the sheaf of practically every variety of : wheat, oats, and barley that is grown in the country, and the samples have been gathered by the Agricultural Department from all over the Dominion. There are also collections which are intended to be displayed at the winter shows in the North and South Islands. Most of the best samples of wheat came from North and South Canterbury, and it is interesting to note that the old-established wheats such as Velvet and Red Chaff; Hunters, White Pearl, Solid Straw, Tuscan, and Red Tuscan. are generally better in the sample than the newer varieties such as Federation, Sensation, Treasure, De Noe, and Bordier. . For some reason or other most of the Bordier seems to be a bit «mpty in the tips, and the sample of Federation shown is very short in the straw and light in the head. On, the other hand, the varieties first named are represented by some splendid samples. Of the oats the bulk have come from Otago and Southland, and generally they are a beautiful lot. As far as the barley is concerned, the Blenheim district, which _is usually regarded as being about the best barley-growing locality m the South Island, if not in the Dominion, has to give place for excellence, to the representative display from Cen-, tral Otago. "Some very fine samples indeed have been sent from the Arrowtown and Queenstown districts. Judging from what may be sent now, says The. Press, New Zealand ahotld have no reason to be ashamed of her products in this particular line.
