An extraordinary mishap j occurred at Barry Docks, near Cardiff, re- • cently The huge sliding [ caisson in the passage between Nos. 1 and 2 • docks suddenly collapsed and sank to the bottom of the lock In consequence of the accident a. dozen vessels were iirprisoned in No. 2 dock. The . caisson was constructed fifteen years ago, and an ■enormous and intricate mass of machinery is involved in the mishap, the caisson having served as lock gate 3 between the two docks mentioned. At the time of the occurrencej the caisson, which weighs about 1000 tons, Was in process of removal to <a neighboring dry dock, and1 had been taken out of its chamber in the side of the lock wall. The structure had hardly been started on its. journey when it heeled over, and sank. Thei;e is only one other such caisson in Great Britain.
