The Methodist Conference discussed the large increase of immigrants into Australia, and decided to appoint a chaplain at each port of entry, and make other arrangements to welcome and look after the interests of arriving: Methodists. Some grave charges were made regarding the women immigrants. One speaker alleged that women landed in Australia, who, if virtuous when tney left, certainly were not so when they landed, and1 the speaker urged, the need for better protection on shipboard.
