SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The Borough School Committee met last night, the' members present being:--Messrs J. J. White (chairman), S. J. Heffer, W. Ching, C. W. Lucas, T. A. Revell, W. J. Girling, F. Birch and -S. A. Ediriger (secretary). Leave of absence was granted to Mr A. J. Maclaine.

A MINIATURE RIFLE RANGE

The Education Board wrote stating that the school ground was too small to permit of a miniature rifle ( range being erected in it, and suggested that" the committee apply for permission to establish a range in the Drill Shed. '

The Chairman said that if the committee adhered to the original site the Board would not put anything in the way of the range being erected there.

Messrs Birch, Heffer and Ching favoured the Drill Hall suggestion.

Mr Girling said that as fas as the Drill Shed was concerned it would mean that it be used only during the day/, and' there. would be practically little expense.

Mr Edinger said that the Drill Shed would require to be lighted, as a bright light was necessary on the

target. Mr Girling asked if the Education Board had stated why the schoolground was unsuitable.

It was decided to ask the Education Board to follow up its suggestion, and in addition to get Lieut.-Colonel Hawkins' opinion in regard to the suitability of th« original sit© selected and the Drill Shed for this purpose. ' The Secretary was also deputed to accompany Lieut.-Colonel Hawkins on his visit of inspection. SCHOOL BOOKS. Thf- Education Department wrote stating that it proposed allowing the committee £13 2s 6d for the purpose of providing the Standard IV pupils with free books under similar conditions to those that accompanied the grant for the supply of free books to I the lower classes. I It was decided to forward this letter to Mr Sturrock, and to draw his attention to it and ask him to :irt upon it. HEADMASTER'S REPORT. The headmaster reported that the average roll number was 449, and the average attendance 420. The attendance banner last month was won as follows:—February 10th, Standard 2 with 99.4 attendance; Fehhiiary 17th, Standard 4, with an : attendance of 99.2; February 24th, | Standard 5, with an average attend- j ance of 99; March 3rd, Standard 4, ! with an attendance of 99.2.

This banner is awarded each week to the standard having the highest average attendance.

ST. PATRICK AND ST. GEORGE

It' was decided to grant the children a half-holiday on St. Patricks and St. George's Days.

APPRECIATION

Mr Birch moved, and Mr Girling seconded, "That this, committee learns with satisfaction that Misses Brewer, Gallop, and McCallum (2) have entered the Wellington Teachers' Training, College for instruction,^ and' expresses the hope ,that they will have a successful career. —

VISITING COMMITTEE

The visiting committee for the past month, Messrs Birch and Heffer, reported that everything was going on satisfactorily at the school. Messrs Penny ; and Revell were appointing the visiting committee for the ensuing month. The meeting then terminated.
