WATER AND DRAINAGE.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —Please allow me enough of your valuable space to make a few comments .on the above. The proposal before the landowners of this borough is: To mortgage their property to the extent of £65,000 in order to provide pressure watersupply and drainage. Now, if we must ape big cities, let us select Christchurch, for she is in every way similarly situated, having the same good artesian water and the same difficulty in draining, lying on a plain as we are. Let us go into her history, .and to some extent be guided. They were about 15,000 strong (we are 4000, in a borough the same size) when -they got their first drainage. They are now over 20,000, and have only recently gone in for a water-supply. I contend that the necessity for such a scheme here can largely be overcome by a little care on the part of the residents. Let our sanitary inspector pay periodical visits to all. Let our Council control the nightsoil business and carry it out thoroughly in close-ly-built areas. Finally, I know of, and wish for, the advantage of such a scheme; also, I would like a. motorcar, but can only afford a bicycle.
