GRAIN AND PRODUCE
THE LOCAL MARKETS
. For \feeks past there has been'a good deal of speculation with regard to the probable prices that oalts, barley, wheat, and chaff would realise locally, but nothing definite has been known of the; actual prices buyers were prepared to pay for any of the products mentioned. There has been a general idea that barley would go up to as high as 6s 6d per bushel, but so far it has' not reached five shillings j and there is at the present time considerable doubt whether farmers will g^t much than 4s 6s per biishel.f A week ;or two ago Marlboroti^li ''farmers could have sold'the whole of their barley yield for about five shiHing®, but ioday things are ' diffe'reni, arid the most that merchants are prepared to pay for prime barley,-! f.O'.b. Picton, is 4s 8d per bushel. It has been reported that 4s 9s has been offered, but this has not been Verified. Inferior lots are -entirely neglected.; There is very little _ tjohig ixi the oats market,- there being; one or two sales of Algerians effected recently at from 3s to 3s 3d. Chaff is fetching £3 a ton in the stack, and potatoes, are realising from £3 10s to £3 15s a ton. . .
