A MOTOR-CAR RECORD
[press association.] - '" , TIMARU, March 7. C. Stevenson established a world's record yesterday, driving his 14^18 motor-car from Invercargill to Christchurch and back to Timaru, a. distance of 504 miles, in 16 hours 10 minutes. H« had. a non-stop run.

Lawyer, politician, Indian judge, and journalist, Sir Douglas Straight, who recently celebrated his sixty-sixth birthday, has had a most interesting career. One of the best stories he tells relates to the time when he stood for election. "In 1870," he said, "when I was doing well at the Bar, a deputation came . from Shrewsbury and said, 'We will have you.' For six weeks I worked like a galley slave, and then beat my opponent, Mr Coates, by thirty-eight votes. I telegraphed to my wife, 'I am in by thirty-eight votes over Coates,' but the message went through as 'thirtyeight overcoats.' " One of the best of sportsmen, Sir Douglas plays tennis and golf.
