AN AMAZING STORY.

A CAMORRA LEADER

The story is based on the evidence of 450 witnesses. Cuocolo married a beauty of bad character. The pair had a reputation as organisers of thefts1 on behalf of the Camorra, also occasionally acting <as police spies. Cuocolo aroused the enmity of Curaco Alfani, who asvp. lad of twenty reorganised the Neapolitan Camorra until ho controlled the horse market, bands of smugglers, public sales, and the deck employees. Alfani nursed his revenge for several years, and' finally engaged six desperadoes to murder Cuocolo, and also to mutilate bis wife with an "S"—cut on the iabdon?en, indicative of the Camorra's supreme contempt of the failure of the police to secure conviction. The murders aroused the citizens to pro-* tests, and the "Government thereupon; ■appointed Ramorino, a brave and; energetic Piedmontese colonel, to trace all the Camorra ramifications.

Ramoriuc gradually traced Alfani's movements. on /the night of the murder, and discovered his associates. Alfani fled to New York, where Petrisino, who was afterwards murdered, discovered him. Extradition being in: possible,, • Petrosino placed Alfani aboard a, steamer, and he was arrested at Havre and taken to Italy. Ramorino secured the whole gang, except one, who fled to Buenos Ayres!
