The lease of grazing rights on Auckland Island were on Thursday morning submitted to auction by the Southland Land Board, but failed to «licit a bid. The group was offered in three lots, as follows:—The lower half of Auckland Island (75,600 acres), at an upset rental of £7 10s j the upper half of Auckland Island (38,----600 acres), at an upset rental of £10; and Rose and Enderby Islands (1995 acres), at an upset rental of £5 ss. Thus grazing rights for a term of twenty-one years over 116,195 acres could have been obtained for th© wonderfully small outlay of £22 10s per annum-. Half the area is in bush, and the greater portion of the remainder is pastoral land, while there also lies treasure estimated at £100,----000 in the wreck of the General Grant, on the western side of Auckland Island. The previous lease of twenty-one years expired about nine months ago.

At this time of the year (says the N.Z. Herald) the scarcity of potatoes is l felt very keenly, especially among the wage-earning classes. The supplies of old tubers have become almost depleted, and consequently prices are very high, the wholesale price being about £10 per ton, and the retail price about 81b or 91b for one shilling. This means a considerable item for large families. New potatoes have not been very plentiful so far, and. have been bringing from 2fd to 3d per lb wholesale, making them rather an expensive luxury. It is gratifying to know, however, that crops are likely to be good, and probably in a week or two a plentiful supply will be available, with a consequent reduction of price.

The Grey River Argus says there is a feeling of uneasiness among the business people of the town owing to the inadequate police protection and the number of undesirables about. It has been arranged to employ a night watchman, the business people contributing one shilling a week each towards his salary.
