AUCKLAND, June 3. The A.R.C. winter meeting opened to-day at JEllerslie in, fine but overcast weather. The track is in good order.

Maiden Steeplechase: First Barrel 1, Arty 2, Mozart 3. Scratched: Cavaliero, Putaruru, and Golden Regal. First Barrel was in front at ihe end of half a mile, and was never afterwards troubled, winning easily by six lengths. King Hippo aridCudweed felk Time, 4min 45sec.. ! Maiden Hurdles: Master Paul 1, Hoanga 2 } Freevata 3. Scratch^: Maharanui, Woollooiriool<x>, and.^Sa-, bine. Master Paul was ih'frp^^att the way, and 'won by two Ji&ngrois. Wimmera and .Prophet made the running in close company till the turning for home, when Prophet was beaten, and Woolloomooloo ran into second place. Wimmera afterwards had the best of it, and won , comfortably by 2i lengths. Time, 4min 32sec.
