CHURCH UNION.

<JHURCH OF SCOTLAND AND THE

. UNITED FREE CHURCH

"WORK OF THE COMMITTEE.

i_PREBB ASSOCIATION.]

LONDON, June 1. The general assemblies of the Church of Scotland and the^ United Free Church instructed the joint committee "of union to continue their deliberations and present a complete report to the next assemblies. Great satisfaction was expressed that the <jommittee had conferred for a year without coming to an impasse. The Rev. Norman MacLpod and Xord Balfour of Burleigh were optimistic of the future. ' Dr George Robson, in the United IPree Church Assembly, stated that the joint committee had agreed that it was noi just that the law recognised ■only the Established Church. Agreement up to this point was a hopeful sign. The chief difficulty would be to frame conditions of. union in no way infringing the Free Church's spiritual independence.
