A remarkable effect of a "Scotch mist" was related to a member of the Christchurch Press staff by Mr A. Donald Paterson, who has just recently returned from a visit to the Old Country. He was attending an orchestral concert in one of Glasgow's theatres, when a fog descended on the city. It penetrated the building, and its intensity increased until the performers on the stage were shut out of sight of those of the audience who were* more than a few yards away. All that they could see was "the dim radiance of the footlights, and the only indication of the presence of the orchestra was the music which came through the gloom. The performance decidedly gave one a weird sensation, and the circumstances under which it was given rather justifies the conclusion that a Glasgow mist is worse than a London fog.

Fraulein Margaret Dittmer, who was appointed on the Berlin police staff in October, 1908, has Had no fewer than 604 cases to deal with during her first year of service (says the Daily Mail's correspondent). Her work consists in acting as the guardian of youthful delinquents, waifs, and children who are ill-treated by their parents. The former are committed to her charge to deal with as she thinks fit, eitKer to place them in reformatories' or: to restore ; them to their parents after she has investigated the circumstances. t Waifs are placed in'orphanages, and'in cases of parental^ cruelty _ which have been proved in court it is Fraulein Dittmer's duty to visit the homes at irregular intervals to prevent the offence being repeated. Of £he 165 school boys and girls who ran away from their homes in the provinces to Berlin last year, the majority, says Fraulein Dittmer. came to the capital to view the imperial palace. T&e remainder either came through a spirit of adventure fired by reading thrilling stories, or because their parents were too severe with them over their lessons.
