THE SAYONARA CUP.

DEFENDER WINS FIRST HEAT

[press association.] (Received Mar. 11, 10.15, p.m.) MELBOURNE,,^ar. 11

In the first race for the Sayonara Cup the Sayonara beat Culwalla 111. by over eight minutes.

The course was ten knots to windward and back. The wind was light, and the sea smooth. The Culwalla crossed the line three seconds ahead of the Sayonara, and kept her advantage for a time; but at the end of an hour the Sayonara was a minute ahead. On rounding the buoy she had increased her lead to nine minutes five seconds. The wind freshened a bit on the return journey, and the Culwulla managed to make up a bit of ground; but the Sayonara proved too good, and won easily by 8 minutes 26 seconds.
