CHRISTCHURCH, March 11. Continuing the first innings of the New Zealand team, Lnsk got Whitty to the leg boundary, and Reese treated Armstrong similarly. At 46 Lusk mis-hit Whitty into Emery's hands at point.—46—4 —22. Sims joined Reese, hut lost him, Whitty bowling the skipper.—s2— 5—20. The same bowler got Maefarlane leg-beforo first ball.—s2— 6—o. An hour's play produced 52 runs. Both Otago's representatives were given leg-before by Carlton to Whitty, bowling left-handed round the wicket. Emery relieved Armstrong after 4a period of slow play, «»d Sims got him to leg for four; then Emery beat Oliff—7s-—7—s. | Armstrong dropped an easy chance from Sims at 88. When the Australians went in they found,no obstacle in the state of the wicket, and by the end of the day had put up a commanding lead. Mayne was got rid of early, and Simpson did not last long. Bardsley and Smith then took the score to 82 for 3. The former was missed once, and also hit a ball into the wicket without dislodging the foails. When Armstrong joined him the bowling was oompletely collared. Bardsley was just approaching his century when he stepped out to Reese and was stumped. Warne and Armstrong played out time.
