LATER ESTIMATE OF THE
DAMAGE BY FIRE.

AUCKLAND, Aug. 18
Reports are current i^hat a woman was seen in one of the1 windows in the •top storey of the Strand Arcade soon after the outbreak, and after retreat by means of the staircase was cut off. One man declares thai'he distinctly .saw a woman dressed ,'iri' white frantically rushing about, making an effort to unfasten the window and crying out for help. If that be so she must have perisned in the flames. So far, however, no onef is reported to be mjwssing. Other principal losses are as follows arid Continental Piano Company £4000 or £5000, Thomas Mitchell (agent for Bowron Bros., Chmtchurch)\ £4500, Leonard and Harrison £2500, Strand Cafe £1000, Albert- Hotel £1000.
