THE SCULLERS.

WANGANUI TEAININU NOTES.

[PEESS ASSOCIATION.] WANGANUI, June 10. Favourable weather conditions have prevailed for the scullers during the past few days, and they have been able to get on some good rowing on the championship course, which is admirajbly sheltered and with water almost like glass. Both the champion and ex-champion have been very busy. On Tuesday afternoon Arnst and Fogwell had a big spurt. The champion, let his ; pacer take a big break (some 15 lengths) and then set off after him. With such a start Fogwell had a little in reserve till the champion got up; then the pair finished at a very solid pace. Much the same work was done yesterday and to-day, with some time spent in practising starting and sprinting. The long rows serve to show the wonderful strength and staying-powers of the champion, who usually appears to finish his heavy task full of rowing. He has done some remarkably fine rowing during the past .few weeks. Webb and Whelch had a lively spin over a couple of miles yesterday, the ex-champion rowing 27 to the minute over the first mile, then dropping to 24. Webb can always hold his pacer comfortably, and in the sprints appears much speedier. He has never shown more pace. The form shown by both men points to a great struggle, as Webb is possessed of wonderful stamina and great pluck. _______________
