OBITUARY.

ME JOHN KENNEDY.

On Sunday evening last, at his1 residence, urovetown, there passed away Mr John Kennedy, one of the fast diminishing band of old Marlborough. settlers. Though he had been ailing for some considerable time, his demise was somewhat sudden,, as he had only been confined to his bed for a few days. Born in 1835, in Arygll-shire,-he came out as a'young mah.tO' Australia, spending five years there in, pastoral pursuits. In 18ti0 he married Miss Cameron and came to New Zealand in the ship Martha. He Intended to have settled in Golden Bay, but the prospects not being inviting, •. he came on to the Wairau, settling at the Big Bush, whereihe has made his home ever since/ When gold was found at the Wakama.rina he-tried his fortune there, and afterwards' sj)ent. some time at Jackson's Head mine.Since then he has been engaged in farming.. He leaves a widow and twelve children, all grown-up, :ip mourn their loss, -to whom, we offer our heartfelt sympathy. ', Two ■ sisters, who also came to New Zealand, predeceased him; namely—Mrs ; McCalhun, ,of Takaka, and Mrs Alex.' Cameron, of Grovetowii. Altliough a man \of unobtrusive temperament he was ever ready to helo a neighbour in time of trouble, and. his uprightness and kindly nature endeared him to all with whom he came in contact. For many years he was a member'of the Groyetown School Committee, and among the many beautiful floral tributes was a cross from the C^rov,etqwn school children, in whom he always took the greatest-^ interest., :Tlie funeral", which was very largely attended, took place,yesterday^, the, service at the graveside beingy conducted, by the local officers of the Salvation Army, of which corps the deceased had long been a valued member. ,
