Mr Hanlon, for the^defence, is delivering a lengthy opening address. j Detective Mcllveney said it was absolutely untrue that he had misread Murray's evidence regarding Connelly's confession at HokitiKa. The latter's statement was, "I alone 1 killed Burke," and that Hallinen and ! Anderson were innocent men. Mr Hanlon, for the defence, laid stress on the fact that much of the evidence* pointed ". to „ Hallinen and 'Anderson as being the guilty men. '/ j Several witnesses then deposed to seeing bloodstains on Hallirien's clothes. One recounted, how Hallinen gave a description of "an assault on a man answering to Burkes description, but was cross-examined to show that this might have referred to a fight with the steward from .the Talune. -» OHRISTCHURCH, May 19. The West Coast murder case was resumed at the Supreme Court today. Constable Butler recapitulated ; the evidence given at the previous trials, ■ and the defence eviuence closed. Mr Stringer, for the Crown, called» as rebutting evidence that of Olaf Hallinen, one of the, men sentenced for the murder in the first case, but who had been pardoned and released.
