THE BARNADO BOYS.

AN OBJECT LESSON.

1 WELLINGTON, Saturday. The! representatives of the famous Dr. Barnardo's Homes addressed a Jhuge'audience at the Town Hall last might. Some dozen or so Barnardo boys, who play various instruments, accompany the Rev Mr Mayers and his assistant,, Mr Aaron. ', They - are fine manly lads, and proved a' useful object lesson as to the value of, the splendid work done in rescuing the waifs and strays of the 'streets and training them up to be useful men and women. When in Canada four or five years ago, I heard the Barnardo boys —many hundreds of whom have been placed on farms in the Dominion — spoken of in the highest terms.:. A few people here are inclined to take exception to subscriptions being asked for m support of work which wealthy England pught to do, they contend, for herself. .'I would not go quite so far as f thisj but it is an astonishing fact that JK)OO people'can be got together in "support of a mission for London, boys, while our own local Boys' Institute, which in a modest way does; such excellent work, should, always be hard up for working funds. "Charity begins at home" is a selfish proverb, often used by those who are never charitable in any cause, either of local or oversea origin, but whilst very properly sympathising with . nd materially aiding the good work of the Barnardo Homes, it is just as well -that we should not neglect a well-de-aerving local'institution.
