DESTRUCTION BY FIRE.

INVERCARGILL, May 15. A fire occurred at 2 o'clock this morning in the premises of J. 1. Peters, watchmaker^ and jeweller, Uee Street. The premises were gutted, and the stock is practically a total loss. A splendid pressure of water enabled the brigade to save the prem-, ises of Broad, Small and Co hardware merchants, and Undrill's drapery establishment, ,on <■ either side. Smoke damaged the former's stock to the extent of £50, and the latter s. to £100. Peters' stock was insured tor £850 in the New Zealand and £550 'in the Victoria. The building (owned by Broad, Small and Co.) was in-, sured for £500 in the South British. / The damage amounts to £400.
