AN EFPICIENCY-CUM-CHEAP-
NESS SCHEME.

WELLINGTON, May 14. Careful consideration is being given by the Government to the police force with a view to maintaining the 'equired efficiency upon the most economical basis. The expansion of the Dominion necessarily requires increasing police protection. The increases have amounted to an average of £11,000 each year since 1904. If the Government are able, while maintaining the ,liecessary efficiency, to make reduction^Xin the present expenditure it is intended to reduce the average increase by at least fourr fifths, or a reduction of about £8000 on the an>punt of the previous year. :: ■;*?:&'ssss};::-:■ '■■ y. ■ ' ''.
