%?■ [PEESS ASSOCIATION. 7 GISBORNE, May 13. The Hon. R. McKenzie, Minister for Public Works, arrived in town last night after a rougli journey over- » land from Opotiki. The Minister spoke favourably of the character of the country passed through. He thought that the railway would pay even after the timber had been cleared away. He was prepared to spend money on its extension as fast as possible if Parliament would vote the money. Since his accession to office the ex- t penditure- had been doubled. The Minister gave emphatic assurance that the line would not be deviated from Motu. No such, suggestion had ever been made to him.
Mr McKenzie will attend a Mayoral dinner to-morrow, and on Saturday will be present-at the formal opening of the Gisborne Oil Company's bore.
