The Anchor Shipping and Fojundry Company's new steamer Waimea arrived at Nelson at 3.15 p.m. on Tuesday, after an "uneventful voyage of 72 days from Greenock. The Waimea is a steel screw steamer, and was launched by Messrs Mackie and Thomson, Ltd., Govan, to the order of' Messrs A. L. Elder and Co., Ltd., London, -for the Anchor Shipping and Foundry Company, Ltd. Her dimensions are as follows:—Length b,p., 150 ft; depth moulded, 10ft. 9in; gross tonnage, 454 tons. Engines: Two sets cylinders 11, .17, and 28 by 21in. stroke; 1801bs working pressure. The estimated i.h.p. is 600, and the speed is 9£ knots. The engines were built by Messrs Ross and Duncan, Govan. The vessel was'designed by and constructed under the supervision of Mr J. W. Brown the owners' superintendent engineer, for the coastal trade. She is especially adapted for bar harbour work. She is fitted with two large hatchways, with two of Clark-Chapman's steam winches at each hatch, for the rapid handling of cargo. The foremast is of steel, ntted with exceptionally strong gear for handling heavy lifts. The vessel is also fitted with steam steering gear and windlass. Electric light is installed throughout, and also to the masthead. The captain's cabin is under the Hfying bridge, and the chief engineer is berthed below the boat bridge. The vessel has a raised quarter deck and forecastle, with a saloon amidships, the officers' cabins being off the saloon. Capt. W. J. Wildman, late of the Alexander, is to be in charge of the Waimea.
