BUTCHER SUSPECTED OF THE MURDER.
A BAD TENANT
[press association.] (Received May 13, 0.40 a.m.) MELBOURNE, May 12. No arrest has yet been made in connection with the Richmond tragedy, in which an old woman named Gallagher, who lived by herself, was found with her head nearly severed from her body.
o'Sullivan, a butcher, living next door in a house belonging to the victim, was arrested on a charge of drunkenness, but was discharged. A butcher's steel was found among the bedclothes in the victim's house. O'Sullivan admitted that it belonged to him, but could not say how it came to be in Mrs Gallagher's possession. It had been lying about his yard for some time. He admitted that he was in arrears with his rent, and that the deceased had served him with notice to quit. He stoutly denied any connection with the murder.
