Layer, Whitty, Hopkins ;and McAllister were omitted from the -Australian team.

The weather was dull, but the wieiket was good. The attendance was i moderate.

-Northants won the toss and'elected •to bat. They made a poor start, the -first two wickets being down for 18, and four for 56.

Vialls played good leg-side cricket. He gave a chance to Bardsley in the slips off -Cotter when he had made seven.

At-luncheon -the score stood at <75 for five wickets.

Wells was 60 minutes at the wickets, and gave a good display of vigorous driving and pulling. -Finally he returned a hot one to Armstrong, which the bowler held.

A smart .return from Ransford was responsible for East's dismissal.

Thompson played a sound, steady ;game. .He batted for ;M) minutes. iHe : gave a chance to Carter at the wickets ioff O'Connor when he had made four.
