The Marlborough Express PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. THURSDAY, MARCH 4, 1909. TARDY JUSTICE.

The news which we publish to-day that the Government has at last recognised its manifest duty to this district by appointing the Hon. C. H. Mills to the Legislative Council, will be received with very great gratification in all parts of the district. Why Mr Mills was not long ago appointed in view of the definite promises made him to that effect is a mystery, but the Government has at last performed this act of tardy justice, and Maryborough as a whole is pleased accordingly. There is, perhaps, no man in politics who better deserves such an appointment. As member for Wairau for many yc*ars, and also as a Minister of the Crown, Mr Mills was always faithful to his trust, and carried out his onerous duties in such a manner as to win the respect and confidence of political friend and foe alike. That he will continue a similarly honourable course in the other Chamber no one can doubt. It scarcely needed Mr Mills's assurance that lie would watch over our interests in the Council. That we already knew would be the case, for "Wairau" and "Mills" are almost convertible terms, and possibly, like an English Queen, who imagined "Calais" to bo carved on her heart, Mr Mills' cardiac organ may well bo supposed to have the word

! "Wairau"" deeply graven in its in-' teguments. All's well that ends well, and nothing remains but to congratulate Mr Mills upon the appointment, ' and to express the hope that he may long live to do honour to the position, and good service to the Dominion.
