THE SEASON.

CANTERBURY'S PROSPECTS

EVERYTHING LOOKING WELL

[FROM OT7R CORRESPONDENT.]

CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 19. "Canterbury in her best spring attire/ fitly describes .the agricultural district at the present moment. Now is the time when'excursions into .the country give the correct view of the surprising fertility of the land in this province. On all hands there is a wealth of grass for the flocks and herds, and crops of wheat, oats and barley cover the broad acres with_ a mantl© of greenness and freshness, inspiring .sanguine hopes for the future harvest. vhe indications regarding the grain, yields and the dairy returns were never more . promising. The wheat fields .-display a 'd&ep* healthy green colour, .pointing to an absence, of blight and a good supply. of reo,ti moisture that will 'carry them well into the hot season if the province experiences another dry spell. Sheep and lambs are in most forward condition, and some of the farms have begun shearing. The cattle are, losing their harsh winter coats, and are; looking sleek again, and the tins q$ creamgoing in by rail, to the hutter ; factories are on the increase every week, .' In, the orchards there is plenty of pear, plum and cherry blossom, and appearances, indicate a good fruiti <season. The season has been a favourable* one for "lucerne. • ■ •,
