THE ROTORUA EARTHQUAKES

The Hot Lakes Chronicle of Wednesday last says:—Between two and eleven o'clock yesterday morning the residents of Rotorua experienced more than the -ordinary number of earth tremors, fully fifty being felt between the hours named. Many of these tremors, which, -were- looked upon as earthquakes, were very pronounced, particularly those occurring at 6.45 in the morning, at 7.45, and again j about 8.45. _ None, however, were sufficiently violent to cause any damage, but alarm was felt by some of the visitors, who, having arrived on \ Monday evening, took the express for | Auckland yesterday morning. In- > quiry made as to the extent of the tremors, elicited the information that they had not been felt either at Waimangu or Wairakei, so that the disturbance was of a local characI ter only, and there was no need for i apprehension. It is about four years since tremors of so continuous a nature occurred, hence alarm. being i evinced. Old-time residents were in no way disturbed by the tremors, as on many occasions similar shocks have taken place.
