KAIKOURA.

(From the Star.) Tuesday*

The concrete work at Garrett's bridge is now practically completed, and only the iilling-iii of the approaches remains to be dono. When Mr Bell was driving kts coach to Kaikoura from Seddon on Friday afternoon, his coach cam© across a sick cow, lying on the middle of the road. The horses shi«d a,nd "played up" considerably, the passengers having to alight to remove the cow from the road. The representatives of tho various local bodies, who combine with Blenheim, Cheviot, and Canterbury Chamber of Commerce delegates in a monster deputation ro the South Trunk Line, leave here on Friday or Saturday. Before Messrs G. Benner and Jas. Davidson, J's P.. yesterday, John Smith, a new 4 arrival in the district— he was a stowaway by the Cygnet on Friday—pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a swag containing blankets and certain articles of wearing* apparel, the property of M. Anderson, on Saturday. After hearing the evidence, of A. J. Oxley, with whom accused _ "pawned" the swag (saying it was his own property), and Anderson, the Bench sentenced Smith to six weeks' imprisonment. Mr R. F. Spensley met with.a mishap when driving to Seddon on Thursday last. When nearing the Waipapa boatshed his horses shied and ran into a/heavily laden waggon, breaking the pole of the buggy and otherwise injuring the vehicle. Mr Spensley was thrown out, and sustained severe injuries. Mr Scott, who accompanied Mr R. F. Spensley, was also thrown to the ground and injured. Another vehicle was obtained and the party drove on to Flaxbourne.

The fourteenth annual meeting of shareholders in \fche Kaikoura Cooperative Dairy Company was held last evening in the Suburban Schoolroom. There was a very large attendance,- and Mr J. W, Davids6n'(Chairman of Directors) presided. The Secretary (Mr J. N, Flower), read the report and balance-sheet, which were adopted. The Secretary read'the fotlowmg particulars comparing.' theCompany^ operations for 1908 with' the previous season:—Milk suppliers numbered in 1908, 62 as against 61' last year; milk supplied 3,352,475 lhs. t as against 3,513,211 lbs.; butter fat obtained 129,845 lbs.,,as against 135,----808 lbs. ; average test 3,87 each year; cheese made, 144 tons 9 cwt. 3 qrs., as against 151 tons 8 cwt; lbs. of milk; required to produce a.lb. of cheese, 10.36 each year; buiter fat required; to produce, 2.5 eaeli -year; paid for butter Tat, llfd this year as against' 12 l-5d last year; paid put to shares holders, £6289 as against £6903; cheese, sold locally, bought at factory, door 5.4 das against 5.7 d; cheese sent to London, at factory door, 5.37 das against 5.84 d last year. The difference of practically id per lb. received from London sales, said Mr Flower, was accounted for partly by th© Home market being lower—from 5s to 7s per: cwt.—than last year. That, however, was supplemented by the increased' cost of conveyance; carting was higher, there were more Government charges this yearx than last, and the freight Home was increased. He; had worked the matter: out, and found thati every single case the Company had! shipped Home had oust 2s more this year than last. This, together with' the drop in the market, accounted for; the smaller receipts. The cost of making had been, this year, .78d, as against .77d last year—that meant the making of lOOlbs of cheese this year had cost only Id more than last year. The grading of cheese sent Home had ranged from 88 points up to 92 points; no one lot had been of second grade. The election of directors resulted as follows:—M&ssrs J. W. Davidson Jas. Boyd, W. Adair, .Hi... bray. .■■Mr Burland was unanimously re-elected auditor at the same remuneration. The Suburban' bcnool Committee, on the motion of Messrs Veiteh and Barratt, was voted .»l> to go to the prize fund. Some discussion ensued as.to the date the factory should re-commenc© operations. The Secretary stated that the curd agitators were now in Lyttelton and would be here by first steamer; it would take a week to instal them : Mr Graham, however, would be ready, to start at any time there was sufficient milk forthcoming. Th© meeting: ultimately resolved that the 14th inst (next Monday), bo the opening day ior receiving milk. The Directors ■met .immediately after, and Mr J. W. Davidson was unanimously re-elected Chairman.
