: . ■ r-4 : • ASSAULT CASE. In the Magistrate's Court this morning:, before by T. Scott-Smith, S.M., Thomas Scott was charged with assaulting Albert Edward Brunette on the 10th September, and also \vith using obscene language, on the same date. Accused,' who was defended by Mr McNab, pleaded not guilty/ Mr McNab asked for a remand until Wednesday next, saying that he was prepared to find the'necessary bail for accused. The remand was granted, bail being fixed at £10, accused's counsel agreeing to deposit this sum. INSUFFICIENT LAWFUL MEANS A decrepit old man named James Mills, on remand, was charged witr having insufficient lawful means oi ! support. It transpired, however, thai jhe had some money, and he was discharged, it being understood that an ' effort would be made to get him intc the old men's home. A FLAX CASE. James Branton sued Levin and Co.. for whom Mr Conolly appeared, foi the return of some flax or its value. £55. The evidence of Branton was taken and the case w,as then adjourned until Friday next. Briefly, Branton's evidence was to the effect that he was lessee of a flaxmill at Flaxbourne, of which Mr Manthell was the owner. Manthell had agreed to bii^ the flax from witness and to pay the men. Manthell took, the flax and was in arrears with the men's wages. Tc safeguard themselves Branton andth« men made an arrangement with Levin and Co.' (Manthell was in the habit of dealing with the L. and M. Company), to take delivery of the flax and hold it until the men's wages were paid. Levin and Co., however, got an indemnity from Manthell's solicitor and handed the flax over to fche Loan and Mercantile Company. Branton consequently jsned Levin and Co. for the return of the flax or its value. Mr Goulter appeared for the plaintiff. JUDGMENT SUMMONS. Griffiths and Son v. F. Roberts, £2 Is. An order was made for the payment of the amount forthwith, in default six days' imprisonment. Warrant to be suspended so long as dependent pays 5s a month. The Court then adjourned till 2.30 p.m. .
