DEER-POACHERS.
CAUGHT AND FINED
[press association.3
NELSON, Sept. 11. At the Magistrate's Court to-day five residents of the Tadmor and Motupiko district were prosecuted for taking deer out of season. They pleaded guilty, and counsel for -the Acclimatisation Society asked for a substantial penalty, owing to the extreme difficulty of securing evidence and convictions in a widely-scattered district where poaching was very rife. The magistrate inflicted a fine of ten shillings on one offender and five shillings on each of the others, with costs totalling. 28s 6d each, fine included. The magistrate said that he had dealt with the men with exceptional leniency as they had pleaded guilty, but it should be a warning toothers that in the event of a conviction heavier penalties would be imposed. On^ a second count a defendant was convicted on a plea of guilty and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. !
