SAN JOSE SCALE.

ITS PREVALENCE IN NELSON

[PEESS ASSOCIATION.]

NELSON, Sept. 10

A somewhat wrc-.'ig impression was conveyed by a Nelson telegram to the morning papers in regard to the Government Biologist's endorsement of the action of, the Pomologist and fruit inspectors in cutting down and cutting back fruit trees in Toi-toi Valley because of San Jose scale.

In the course of an interview Mr Kirk was asked'what was being done in regard to gardens not" yet treated by the inspectors. He replied: "The inspectors, as far as possible, will complete the spraying or affected trees in Toi-toi Valley, but owners may rely that trees will not be headed back more than sufficient to enable effective spraying to be carried out, and trees will be cut back only sufficiently to allow spraying to be done." This implies that on the protest of householders the virtual wholesale destruction of fruit-trees that was proceeding has been/ suspended .as a consequence of the representations made.
