Mr G. Spencer Chapham, of Hastings, a Liberal, announces that he will contest the Hawke's Bay seat at the General Election.
A cablegram from London states that the Rev. Henry Steel Craik, formerly of Western Australia, has been appointed minister" of the Beresford Street Congregational Church, Auckland, and sails for New Zealand in July,-
A Dunedin Press Association message states that Sir James Mills will proceed to. Vancouver by the Marama, leaving Fiji on June 10. During his absence from the Dominion, which will extend over several months, Mr Holdsworth will undertake the general management of the Union Company.
Mr Charles Hume, resident secretary of the Australian Widows' Fund Life Assurance Society in New Zealand for the past three years and a half, has received notification of his transfer to the head office of the society in Melbourne. He is to be succeeded in Wellington by Mr B. H. Pascoe.
A Press Association telegram from Napier states that Mr Robert Rowland Durrant, a well-known resident, and one of the. oldest engine-drivers on the Government Railways, is dead. He drove the mail-train as usual on Thursday, but died in his bed at 3 o'clock yesterday, probably from heart disease, in his 58th year. A son of the late Mr Durrant is Mr A. R Durrant, the well-known local chemist, to whom sincere sympathy is 1 extended.
