SHIPPING RINGS.
INFLUENCE ON AUSTRALIAN
TRADE
[press association.] (Received May 16, 10.25 a.m.) . ' / SYDNEY, May 16. Speaking at a reception, Mr Morgan, the Commissioner from the Manufacturers'> Association who is _ visiting the Commonwealth to inquire into State Trade, attributed the drift of trade into foreign channels largely to the' existence of the shipping ring, which included all the regular steamship companies doing business between Australia and Britain. They had a hold of the whole import trade of Australia, and it was absolutely impossible for any other shipping company to enter the trade or promote healthy competition. The whole trade , was tied up by rings and the system of deferred rebates.
