WAIRAU v. ATHLETIC.

After being fine for many, weeks— too fine, in the opinion of some—the weather "turned crusty", yesterday, and made the match between the Wairau Cricket Club's senior team and. the Athletics, from Nelson, far from pleasant for players and public alike. Showers fell at intervals during the day, and when it was not actually raining the wind was biting and the light bad—factors which militated against good cricket and a large attendance.' * . .

The result of the match was an. easy victory for the home team by 171 runs on the first innings. Athletics batted first, but were alt out for 47, Cunningham (18 not out) and Louissoh, (11) being the only batsmen to make any sort of a stand against the bowling of Hylton. Wairau responded with 218, towards which Goulding (64), Martin (not out 54), Fisk (36), Pierpoint (22) and Tyler (14) were the chief contributors. Goulding's score included two sixes and nine fours, while Martin's was an attractive innings. The most successful Athletic bowler was Neale, whose average read 5 for 59. On going in again the visitors made a much better showing, the board reading 126 for 5 wickets when the failing light compelled a cessation of play. Afternoon tea was provided by the lady friends of the Wairau Club, and enjoyed by both teamß. Following are the scores:— v . ATHLETIC—Ist Innings.
